Dr. Sandwich - New Restaurant in Beverly Hills!!

In my journey to eat and live a healthier lifestyle... on Sunday I found myself at a great new place called Dr. Sandwich.  I know, I know..... it sounds "carbalicious"  however QUITE the contrary!!

All their produce is purchased each morning and all of their salads are FRESHLY prepared, daily.  You can order your "sandwich" in a Pita, a Baguette, a Lafa or on a plate - with as many or as little toppings as you want!

I ordered the Chicken Shawarma and my sister ordered the grilled chicken (dark meat).  The spices and flavorings were uniquely different.

The Shawarma had traditional flavors and was YUMMY!!!  It was served with 2 different cabbage salads and Israeli salad.   The portion was TOOO much for me - but all was sooo yummy!!!  They served my lunch on a glass plate and a beautiful tray.  We also ordered Mama Carmela's Humus - which is really the owner's mom's recipe..... and sooo YUMMY!!!

I didn't get a picture of the Grilled Chicken because we had already devoured a good portion before I remembered to take the picture!  lol

I have to say that this was the freshest meal I had had prepared for me in a very long time. On my fitness journey.....this is EXACTLY WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!!!!

Give them a try!  They are located at 9113 West Olympic, Beverly Hills, CA

Big hugz,

Injury....but still working out!

So in my efforts to be Queen Grappler and Jui Jitsu master..... I injured myself!  UGH

I think I over practiced a Jui Jitsu move, which was trying to throw my 13 year old, 211 lbs son.  The move was to position my Right foot on his Left Hip and pushing him to the left as I moved my hips to the right all while trying to mount him so that I could pin him to submission.  This was just practice... after several attempts and lots of frustration on my part, Parker let me take him down and he really tried helping me getting the move correct.  Unfortunately, I should have stopped or used the other leg about half way in between.... OUCH!!  My right butt cheek/Hip hurt soo much and the pain now pulls through to my calf.  I have a doctor's appointment on Friday (earliest appointment) and am sitting on a heating pad and now taking pain reliever (which I was refusing before yesterday).  With my right leg propped up on my medicine ball.

Since I think I should be laying off the exercise until I know whats going on, I am doing upper body workouts at the gym and home. At home I use dumbbells and do a variety of curls along with stomach crunches.  I hope soon to be back on track!

Any tips on how to heal this injury.... I WELCOME ANY AND ALL!!!

Big Hugz,

Carmen

Cute Doggies at home and at the Patios!

I went to the Patios in Valencia this weekend and saw the biggest and cutest poodles I have seen in a long time. They looked like twin poodles, one white and the other black!   See how cute below

Of course they aren't as cut as my Muneca and Buster....but they were adorable!!

Speaking of my 2 little hoodlums  (smile) I have to let you know that Buster was recently not feeling well and after taking him to our favorite vet, Dr. Garcia of Paws and Claws, he has a heart murmur and may have heart issues.  I am currently trying to schedule him for an EKG as well as other cardiac testing this week while I am still off work.  Hopefully we will get this testing completed on or by Friday, February 28th.

Please send me positive thoughts on my Buster.

Big Hugs,

Carmen

Stats Day - Great results!!

Well...finally a break through!!!

I believe it was a very conscious effort to do better with my diet and to increase my work out routines.

This week I went back to the gym and worked my muscles after 45 minutes on the elliptical  - i did that 2 times this week. But the killer work out were I think I got the most benefit was with Coach Kent this past week.  He worked me hard and we also added squats with the medicine ball, twists with the medicine ball, push ups, sit ups and jump rope.  We also grappled...and my right hip muscle is still sore!  lol  Overall .... a great work out with Coach Kent.  Remember you can check him out at bodybuilder.com - he does training in person as well as online.  Great Coach and motivator!

Ok....here are the stats for the week:

Weight Loss - 2 pounds
Inches Lost - 3 total

My photographer Parker is with dad this weekend, but after my busy day today I will see if Coach Kent can help me out so that I can add photos.

I feel great!  I feel healthy and spunky today!!  All my efforts are paying off... I do need to keep reminding myself that this is a slow process and requires patience....but the results will come so long as I stick to the plan of eating healthier/making better choices and continue my workouts. On my own and with Coach Kent.... as I mentioned before I do want to compete in an appropriate age/weight category for women Jui Jitsu by the end of the year!!

Coach Kent reminds me that muscle weighs more than fat and though the scale doesn't reflect it all the time.... I AM LOSING BODY FAT AND GAINING MUSCLE.  So.... I am really going to try to focus on healthier choices and good workout.s

Thanks for all the encouragement!!

Big hugz for the day!!

Carmen

Feeling Great Day!! Mani/Pedi at Ocean Nails in Stevenson Ranch, CA

On Thursday.... I decided to pamper myself to a wonderful Manicure and Pedicure at a great new place in Stevenson Ranch, called Ocean Nails.  They have been open for a couple of months now and I have previously had services with them - since they opened in fact!

Amy did my manicure and Kim did my toe nails.  It was the MOST yummiest experience I have had there EVER.  Amy was the sweetest and most consciousness manicurist!  I have officially switched from my normal gal (who is on vacation) to Amy... she is the best!!  Kim  was very nice as well.  She worked my feet and gave the yummiest massage on my feet and legs....felt heavenly.  The spa chairs give massage as well as you are seated and it is all so very tranquil and yummy!

Check out Ocean Nails in Stevenson's Ranch and ask for Amy and Kim...you won't regret it.  Call them at 661-284-6986 for an appointment and tell them Carmen sent you or you saw the mention on my blog!!

Have a great time and relax.....

Great Work out Tonight with Coach Kent Gavensky! Parker went Too!!

I went to the gym earlier today and Parker and I wanted to do some mat activity.... so off we went!

Today was the best work out I think I have had with Coach Kent.  We did some mat work out - must mostly other training that we hadn't mixed in - but apparently we will be mixing in more often!!

Parker did a great job on the mat. I have fresh bruises and maybe a few bruised ribs - but overall, I held my own.  He was helpful with helping me get my moves down and giving me 1/2 speed.... thank God!  In between we skipped rope, we used a medicine ball with each other - twisting our torso's and handing off the ball to one another.  Parker lifted dumbbells (25 lbs) - started doing some curls, I opted for pushups and squats using the medicine ball.

I don't think I have ever sweat so much without wearing a sweatshirt and being in the sauna... and even then, I still sweat more tonight than with any other work out I have ever done.  I am sure I burned off calories with this work out.... it was FANTASTIC!!  My body is a bit sore, not from the work out, but from being thrown by Parker.

A great way to end the day!!

Thanks Coach Kent Gavensky... you are the work out king and will help Parker and I transform our bodies in a healthy way!!

Good nite everyone!!

Carmen

My Self Talk and Words of Encouragement ....

Today, as I mentioned....was a hard day for me to go to the gym and even think about working out.  But I found myself texting my friend Lou the following text...

"I so don't want to go to the gym...but I'm here.  The only way I'm going to get results is by pushing my ass 'cuz I don't get results by just thinking about it!!  Inside I go!"

I am glad I went in and did my work out!!  I feel GREAT today!!!

Hugz,

Carmen

Work Out Summary and Mat Work Photos!

I started my morning with my hot lemon toddy and honey today and a protein shake for breakfast.

I haven't been to the gym in a couple of days and really had to push my butt to actually walk in.  But .... an hour and a half later.... I FEEL GREAT!!  I did 40 minutes on the elliptical, I worked some chest press machines and pull downs.  I added weights to the chest press machines - depending on the machine I increased the weight from 20 to 30, 40 and 50.  I am doing more reps with less intervals... so its good!  I worked the leg abductor and adductor today....increased the weight by at least 15 lbs.  I tried for more, but couldn't quite get there.... something to work towards.  I stayed in the sauna for about 10 minutes.... was good!

After my work out I drank a Amplified Whey Bolic Extreme 60 - Fruit Punch flavored drink.  I purchased from the local GNC Store last month.  It claims that by drinking this product, I will have a:

1. 30% increase in Muscle Strength
2. Rapid Absorbing Whey Isolates and Hydrolysates
3. 7.7g of Leucine Plus 8.5g of Micronized Aminos
4. Increases Strength and Stamina with half the sets.

I was advised to only use 1 scoop per 8-10 ounces, not the recommended 3 scoops. That it was too much for me.  However the product information states the following:

Leucine creates an ideal environment for muscle protein synthesis.
The Amino acides added are pulverized to better absorption - better and faster muscle fuel.  They state the key amino acids support muscle building and recovery.

I used this product for over 2 months now and definitely have seen an increase in my strength and muscle. I can feel it when I am working the mats and training and when I run/do sprints.   My 13 year old likes to remind me who's stronger on the mats everytime he has a chance.  However.... even he said that he could tell a difference in my strength and that he almost had to tap out a couple of times!  So...that lovely comment sent me to the moon and back!!

Here are some pics of when Parker and I went to Coach Kent Ganesky's to work the mats.  GREAT work out!!  Parker's shirt was wet from sweat and I was drenched with his and my sweat!  lol

What To Eat Before Training BJJ

What To Eat Before Training BJJ

In my research on how I should revise my diet while I am training, I read the attached article on What to Eat Before Training BJJ (Brazilian Jui Jitsu).  My trainer Kent Ganevsky also echoed the same diet.

My goal is to stay energized to train and to lose weight all while I build muscle and strength.  The article states to have lean protein or even a protein shake after the mat work out, but to also eat good carbohydrates and greens to keep light prior to.

Great article!  Let me know your thoughts!

New Stats for the Start of the Week and NEW JOB!!!

Happy Presidents Day everyone!

Great end to a great week. I had a great Valentine's weekend with all my Valentine's.... fun, fun, fun!!!

Though I shared chocolate covered strawberries, porterhouse steaks and yummy mexican food with great friends and family, I only gained .4 ounces since Thursday!  I can see by staying on path, continuing my workouts and remembering the goal is helping me in my journey.

I will be going out for a hike this morning to start my engine going and then doing some weight training.  Parker has requested to "go to the mats" after he finishes homework - so if Kent is willing to oversee us and open up his home - it looks like I am going to need to teach my boy a lesson... do him a little schooling until he submits!!!  lol

Anyway - I will measure when I return and post the increase/decrease in inches when I return today.

I am starting my day with my morning Lemon/honey toddy, I will then have my lean shake and off I go to start my day in the fresh air!!

NEW JOB

I received a job offer last week and accepted. It is less than what I was earning, but understand that sometimes you need to step back to move forward.  I start on March 3 - however I just sent an email to start on February 26th. If I start during February, my insurance will kick in for April 1!!  Great news and I am excited.  Thank you all for sending positive vibes and your prayers my way!!

Have a great Monday to all!!!

Big hugz,

Carmen

Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Blogger Fans!!

Much love, compassion, patience, acceptance and forgiveness for all on this wonderful Valentine's Day.

Today, It is me and my punkin'...my 13 year old tower of power!!  I am so grateful for all my children, Tori, Celia and Parker they are the loves of my life!!  I do have room for more love to share.... when the time is right is when I will find the right partner who can keep up with me and my bad-ass attitude!!  lol

Tonight, I have made my Valentine, Speghetti with red meat sauce, a beautiful green salad and yummy fruit from an Edible Arrangement that was delivered today.  Some of the fruit missing, but his is dessert for tonight!!

I am soo proud of my Punkin' - he has his interview with Chaminade High School tomorrow morning at 9:20 a.m.  Chaminade has requested that we entertain the school, they have a lot to offer, they have a fabulous football program (they are the new state champs!), they are a catholic, college prep school located in West Hills.  I am sooo proud of Parker - he has grown up very quickly and has so much going on for him. I thank God for him....truly!

The brief story is that my 3rd husband wanted to have another child - I did not. I figured 2 girls were enough for me to handle!  However...as a good latina, Catholic girl.... I attempted.  While my doctor said it would be years for me to get pregnant.... damn doctor was INCORRECT!!!  I got off the pill on my birthday, May 8, 1999 and was pregnant by July 4, 1999.  I was so upset about the pregnancy and Dad was very excited...OVERLY Excited!  Within the week that the pregnancy was confirmed, the doctor told me that there was something wrong with the pregnancy and that I would miscarry over the weekend and to rest.  I went to a picnic that weekend and noticed all the new moms with babies...so sweet. I was sooo heartbroken that my baby wasn't going to be with me and was sooo saddened that I felt so angry about the pregnancy news.... because at that moment... I would do anything to keep my baby.   I cried most of the weekend.

Monday the doctor called me and he told me that he was mistaken, there seemed to be a problem with the tests and to come into the office right away.  I did and they confirmed that all was well with the pregnancy and that I WAS NOT going to miscarry.  I was sooo greatful for the news.

I do believe that God is a just God, that he works in mysterious ways and allows us to meet the most extraordinary people at extraordinary times.  He is the one who helped me realize that being pregnant was a blessing and that I truly wanted this baby... who is now my Parker Boy. I am sooo very grateful indeed!

To all a very special evening and Valentine's Day!

Workout - Gym and Jui Jitsu Wrestling

Today I started out at the gym and did 40 minutes on the elliptical.  It has been getting a bit easier for me to do the elliptical and I am able to keep a speed of 3.0 pretty consistent.  When I go to the gym, I normally where my Golds Gym Shorts, Arm Sweat Bands and Tummy Sweat band and a sweat hoodie.

I use the elliptical with my hoodie up and normally read a magazine or book as I keep my speed up.  I want to sweat as much as I can and maximize the time and the burn!

After the elliptical, I upped my weights for:

 the chest press,
pull downs,
side twists,
back,
leg abductor
Row machine
calf pull ups

It was a great workout!  I did not go to the sauna on this day - had too many things on the to do list!  :)

In the evening, I went to Coach Kent's for Jui Jitsu/Grappling. We worked out for about an hour - an hour 1/2 and we had about an even amout of times were we both submitted - meaning we tied!  lol  He says I am a lot stronger than day 1 and that each day I seem to get stronger.  I also have been looking at various videos via utube to gain more insite on moves for take downs and submissions.  IT PAID OFF!!  lol

The finish of another great day!!

Night, night,

Carmen

Week 4 - A New Week and New Stats!

Tuesday morning and feeling great!  I have a job interview today at 11 a.m. and wanted to let you all know that determination and love for myself is adding to wonderful personal success as it relates to my Fit and MORE Fabulous journey!!  Not to mention my job search!!  :)

My transformation has included a change in my eating habits, working out at LA Fitness Gym, in Newhall, and Grappling/Jui Jitsu Training with Coach Kent.

New Stats and Pics

Below is the condensed chart I have been using to chart my journey. I started weighing myself since December/2013 will continue to do so,  for this blog,  through May 8, 2015.  I will continue my journey even thereafter....this is a lifestyle change ...NOT a project!!  (thanks Lou for the reminder).

The highlighted yellow indicates decreases in the numbers (weight and/or inches) and the red are increases in the numbers (weight and/or inches).

The great news is that my workout clothes - mostly my sports bras - weren't fitting as nicely as I would like.  My bras weren't as supportive and my pants were sagging in the crotch and butt areas, therefore new workout clothes were necessary!  Workout clothing - Thank you Big 5 store - Valencia - for having a great selection of sports bras and sports wear for us bigger gals!!  Love the new sports bras and pants I got yesterday.... on sale, thank you very much!!!  I will need to return a pair of pants and my knee pads - both were just a bit small  :(  But...I saved my receipts and will head in after my interview!

Thanks to all for the encouragement and support!

Hugz and kissez,

Carmen

Stats for Week 3

This week I changed up my routine and had some interesting results, that transpired due to my extreme change in diet and lack of hitting the gym. I can appreciate that I might have gained muscle, causing the scale and inches to reflect accordingly - however the facts are the facts.

Weight - from 227.6 to 228.8 - a gain of 1.20 lbs
Total Inches 384.5 inches to 332.5 Inches - a total gain of .5 inches overall.

Today, I plan on beginning my research so that I can definitely have the best nutritional and fitness program for me and the goals that I am trying to achieve.  This week will be almost identical to week 1 while I do my research - from a nutritional perspective.  I will be attempting to work the gym, LA Fitness Newhall -  into my week at least 4 times with at least 2 grappling sessions with Kent G.

Today after my grappling session last night I started my morning famished and made myself 2 eggs with roasted chilies and feta cheese. It was yummy and rich in protein!

Off to do some strengthening training and more grappling!

Have a great Sunday!!

Carmen

Short Term Motivational Goal!

I love to shop and NORDSTROM Rak is my store.  My sister-in-law Lydia Morales, through talking about all of her finds, helped me not only learn about this store, but be a frequent visitor and purchaser!  lol  Thank you Ms. Lydia Morales!!

On one of my trips to the Rak right before I decided to blog, I found this beautiful, feminine, long lace dress that was just .... stunning. I tried it on and well.... if you every saw the movie Steele Magnolias, I will quote a line that explains how I saw myself....

".....looks like 2 pigs fighting underneath a blanket!"

If you haven't seen the movie.... imagine what that might look like! I decided to purchase the $300 Adrianna Papell dress (which I bought for $59.99) as I want to be able to wear the dress without any spanks, girdles or other accessories to pull me in, I want to wear it "au-natural!" Of course with the regular underwear (bra/panties) but... just that.    At this point, I can wear the dress as is, but it doesn't lie as smooth as I would like. It hugs all the curves, which I like, but shows all the "ripple" effects as well. If this is a new concept - check out the photos of me in my workout clothes and you will understand what I am referring to.  Sports bra and shorts - full disclosure!  (Thanks Lou).

My daughter had asked where I would where the dress once I fit into it and while I had hoped to have a Valentine and to wear it to a special Valentine something.... In lieu of not having that, I told her I would wear it everywhere - shopping, when I did the laundry... lol.  Seriously - I am sure I will have many opportunities to wear it. I have a wedding in mind in November of this year for Anthony Sanchez and Steven Simm. By that time.... I am sure I will need to get it taken in!

Wish me luck and I can't wait to wear it for a beautiful wedding in November.  And if any of my readers wants to be my valentine next weekend....let me know.  :)

Hugz and kisses,

Carmen

End of the Week Summary

It is important for me to remember my goals of Fitness and More Fabulous By Fifty. I must keep it as a priority and continue to work on my goal. And quite honestly it is not just by when I turn 50.... but a lifestyle change to help me be healthier and happier.

It was hard for me to focus and stay focused on the goal this week.  I steered away from my protein shakes and ate more solids - healthy solids.  :)  Unfortunately - I must have not segwayed into it too well as I had a negative reaction.  On Monday, I ate more fruit, veggies and meat - I continued to stay away from carbs (breads, pasta's, etc) and white sugar. I was very sluggish on Monday and Tuesday. I didn't want to get out of bed or to the gym and it seemed that my body wanted to sleep. I wasn't depressed or sad, just my body was tired.  So I tried to rest....    By Wednesday, my stomach was achy, bloated and I was not feeling the best.  Wednesdays I have a Salsa Rueda class and I even had to leave early due to just not feeling well.

I got home and realized that I had not had a bowl movement in a couple of days - evidently drastically changing my diet and not going to the gym helped caused this uncomfortable experience.  Once I realized that that could be why I was not feeling well - I made myself a double beet juice drink/cocktail and within a couple of hours was very much relieved!

I went the to gym this week 3 times and had 3 Jui Jitsu Grappling sessions (Sunday, Thursday, Saturday) - so I had plenty of cardio.  I am getting stronger with my grappling, but definitely need more direction on technique and strength training.  Trainer Kent G. and I will be adding strength training in with our grappling training - staring today.  I am excited - I am still enjoying this training and exercise - the workouts are GREAT.  Though I have been trying to stay with my protein drinks as of Friday, Coach Kent encouraged me to actually eat (vs drink) my protein. He stated that my muscles need more protein as they are developing, more than the shakes give.  He encouraged me to even eat last night when I got home (after 10 p.m.) to have some protein, even if it was opening up a can of tuna.  The thought of canned tuna disgusted me so.... I went to Pollo Loco (my friend Lou's favorite restaurant - lol) and got an under 500 calorie salad with Chicken and Avocado.  It was good - I picked out the chicken and avocado and miraculously.... went to bed rather quickly once I got in and settled.

What I learned most about both experiences, was this - change is good, however if I am going to change my eating patterns or work outs, I must drink plenty of water and really pay attention to my body, it's functions and my pains so that I can consciously make decisions that are the healthiest for me and have the best overall benefits!!  I also need to do more research about eating proteins vs drinking them; research on the proper diet for training, losing weight while building muscle and finally research on eating after 7 p.m.  I was bulimic and anorexic back when I was in my mid-teens and I know I have food issues (all of my life) so quite honestly.... I am too compulsive when my head is in the game, therefore I will definitely get to researching immediately so that I can make better decisions.

I love all these wonderful lessons and self realizations that are coming out during my journey!

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Sunday Wrestling Workout - Kickoff to a new Week!

So last week I kicked off the week with fitness/health guru Kent Ganevsky and had GREAT results.  This week - I thought I would do the same.  The difference - I took my 13 year old son with me, Parker.

We trained in submission wrestling with Kent yesterday. Check out wrestle.com for pics/videos of folks who are trained....not beginners like Parker and I.  I want to do THAT!!   Truly a great feeling/rush and burn of calories...all while I was having fun!!  Here are a few other websites to check out regarding Kent Ganevsky's skills and abilities.

Anyway....  again, I have to give props to Kent , another great work out. He was able to give both Parker and I training, tips and homework for our next training.  I want to try to work in at least 2 trainings a week - if I can do 3 - I will do 3. It is truly an awesome feeling during and after the work out.

This week - Parker had some fun "throwing" his mom around.  Though he was told to go "half speed" with me....the kid just doesn't know his own strength!!!  lol    Parker thoroughly enjoyed the training and so did I.  Not only did I get a GREAT work out and practiced moves, but I got to have all this fun with my 13 year old too.  That was the icing on the cake.  The session inspired Parker so much that he told me that he wanted to help me get into shape and he wanted to practice moves with me so that I could get better.  If I can quote him for a second, as we were driving away, he says, " Mom...I don't want to hurt your feelings or anything....but you need a lot of work!"  He made me smile from ear to ear as he told me what I needed to do to get stronger and better and his plan to help me.  I do love my baby boy!

Here are pics of the training from  yesterday:
